A hand-coloured photograph of William Ross, standing in traditional Highland dress, playing the bagpipes. The tartan in the kilt, shawl and bagpipes are painted pre-dominantly in red.
Pipe Major William Ross was Queen Victoria's Piper; this was a position created by Queen Victoria in 1843, after a visit to the Marquess of Breadalbane to Taymouth Castle, where she and Prince Albert heard his Piper and greatly admired the music of bagpipes. Ross was the second person to hold this position.
From a blue velvet bound album with gold coloured metal corners which has a watercolour of flowers by Princess Louise, set into the front cover.
