Photograph of San Juan Island as seen across the Haro Strait that divides British Columbia from Washington State in the United States of America. In the foreground is scrubland with rocks that gives way to open grass land in the middle distance.

Captain William Henry McNeill was born in Boston in 1803 and was the Captain of a fur trading expedition that set sail from Boston to the Pacific Northwest in 1830. In 1837, McNeill founded Fort Victoria, British Columbia, as a safe and secure area from which the Hudson Bay Company could operate. In 1843, McNeill established Fort Rupert on Vancouver Island in 1849. In 1863, he retired to live on a farm on Vancouver Island and died in 1875.
