Photograph of the city wall of Jalalabad where General William Elphinstone was buried in 1842. The wall is made of a rough stone and is raised at the left end. A row of Afghan men wearing loose robes and turbans are arranged in a row in front of the wall. In the foreground to the right there are two trees on a raised mound. Afghan men and woman, and one soldier, are gathered below the trees. A lone figure wrapped in a shawl is standing in the centre of the foreground. General Elphinstone was the commander of the British garrison in Kabul during the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). He died in captivity following the failed British retreat from Kabul. This photograph was taken by John Burke, who travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80).
