Collector's description (pers. email Joe Bauman to Alan Griffiths, 5 February 2014)

I know they are his {Elias O. Beaman] signature and writing because I obtained a copy of one of his letters from the Library of Congress and the writing was identical. These were all printed on the backs of C.R. Savage blank stereocards, obscuring the Savage logo - I was able to compare the tiny bits of the Savage backs that show up between the separate views on the cards; they match Savage's back exactly. I believe Beaman probably made these in an attempt to get them published as a series but I don't think he succeeded with these. They show his private trip to the Grand Canyon, which he made after splitting up with the John Wesley Powell expedition (there was bad blood between Beaman and Powell.) As far as I could discover, this was the first private - that is, not government-sponsored - photographic expedition to the Grand Canyon. Marble Canyon is the lower part of the Grand Canyon.
