Photograph of the Kimberley volunteers. The group of fourteen white men are arranged in three rows. General Sir Charles Warren (1840-1927) is seated in the centre of the middle row with Major Loftus John Rolleston (1839-1903) beside him to the left. They are wearing ammunition in straps across their chests and most are holding a helmet or rifle. Kimberley was a large diamond mine and town in Griqualand-West, a British colony in southern Africa. During the 1870s the town created part-time volunteer forces who fought in a series of local wars including the 9th Frontier War.
