Photograph of the Kimberley Mine. Within the pit there is a series of earth ledges at different heights. There is a row of machinery on the far edge of the pit. Long cables extend from the machinery into the pit. The Kimberley Mine was a major diamond excavation site in Griqualand-West, a British colony in southern Africa. A large town was established nearby to accommodate the mass immigration of workers.
