| Gustaf (Johan Mauritz) Florman (1831-1900) After the great fire in Carlstad (Karlstad) 1865 1865 (or after) Carte de visite Private collection of Hector Meinhof LL/85168 The fire started 11:30 am on Sunday the 2:nd of July in the city's bakery. Karlstad had 5000 inhabitants and was mainly made up of wooden buildings. 95 percent of the city was destroyed - but nobody died in the fire!! (Ironically, 300 died in a cholera epidemic the following year.)
The day after, work began to rebuild the city and on July 4th - two days after the fire -the city council announced a contest to get ideas on how the new city would be designed. The new Karlstad was built in stone.
