Photograph of a camp of the Royal Horse Artillery near the Safed Koh mountain range. There is a pile of hay in the foreground to the far left and three soldiers are sitting and kneeling on a low stone wall to the right. Soldiers are gathered with horses and gun carriages on the open land behind. There is a row of trees to the right and the Safed Koh mountain range extends into the distance. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
