The illustration is based on an albumen print by Robert Howlett, 1857, "The Great Eastern" (Victoria & Albert Museum, Museum no. PH.247-1979).
(Rose Teanby, 31 January 2020, Facebook comment) Robert Howlett also took Robert Stephenson's portrait, held by the V&A now. This image was used for the front cover of the Illustrated Times special edition commemorating the SS Great Eastern, and it also appeared in Brunel's office as a reminder of his friend.
