Photograph of a garden in Jalalabad. There is a pavilion with a veranda formed of a series of arches at the centre of the garden. There are trees surrounding it and mountains can just be seen in the distance. Soldiers wearing turbans and carrying guns are spaced across the grass in the foreground. A man wearing loose robes and a turban is sitting on the grass to the left. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
