Outstanding hand-tinted occupational cdv tintype of an identified apple salesman proudly displaying his produce. We are quite intrigued with his traveling case, which has been carefully stuffed with cotton to protect his precious cargo from bruises and bumps. The case appears to holds nine apples although one has been removed to show our salesman’s business card which reads either E.S. or E.Z. Chatters. The photographer has tinted the apples in various shades of red and green. In a hilarious twist, upon close inspection a number of them are close to the rotting stage which gives us a rare look into the challenges of the 19th century traveling produce salesman! The gentleman has a wonderful smile and we are certain he did quite well in his profession. One last observation is that the photographer has created a slightly strange perspective by placing his subject in a chair with unusually short legs. Maybe it was a child’s chair but we see no purpose unless this was an itinerant with an extremely cramped wagon height.
