Image of the solar spectrum. Two paper labels flank the image on either side, beneath the cover glass. The strip showing the spectrum has diagrammatic lines and letters drawn on it. To the left is written in ink: Coloured spaces, [underlined, then separated by lines:] Lavender Violet Indigo Blue Green Yellow Orange Red. The label on the right: '1842 July 27 Therm. 96F. Latitude 37° 10 N. Time occupied in exposure 15 minutes [then listed] A. Copper neg. ray B White ray C Daguerreotype ray D White fringe E Lower neg. ray F Faint inner ray G accidental mercury stain At H in some proofs there is a maximum point At K in some proofs there is a negative maximum point [then line] Formed on yellow iodide of silver [then signature] JWDraper.
