Although the photographer thought to have taken these pictures was especially praised for his 'beautifully lit and simply composed studies of racial types', the two sitters here appear extremely dignified and not at all as the subjects of an 'anthropological' study. The one holding an umbrella and looking directly at us may be a member of the local aristocracy (she is a lady). The other, with a handsome bare foot on a boulder and an axe by her side may be an herb collector (she is a worker).
