Celebrated American photographer Alec Soth has collaborated with his eight year old daughter Carmen to create a new body of work made in Brighton, specially commissioned by Photoworks for the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: New Documents, curated by Martin Parr. Like much of Soth’s previous work, the photographic journey combines poetic and documentary sensibilities, each photograph and idea leading to the next. People, places and objects are woven amongst local newspaper headlines. Serendipity is at play as text and image combine to make uncanny connections and provide a captivating portrait of a city.

A photographic journey across Brighton & Hove with his eight year old daughter formed a captivating portrait of a city for Alec Soth's Photoworks commission, his first in the UK.
The thought provoking results were exhibited as part of the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010 and published as the Photoworks book Brighton Picture Hunt.
Like much of his previous work, Brighton Picture Hunt is a photographic journey that combines poetic and documentary sensibilities, each photograph and idea leading to the next. People, places and objects are juxtaposed with local newspaper headlines. Serendipity is at play as text and image combine to make uncanny connections and provide a captivating portrait of a city.
This commission was shown in the 2010 Brighton Photo Biennial’s keynote exhibition at the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, alongside work by Rinko Kawauchi, also commissioned by Photoworks and work by Stephen Gill commissioned by The Archive of Modern Conflict. The project is accompanied by a limited edition Photoworks book, a limited edition print and featured as a folio in the Autumn Winter 2010 issue of Photoworks. Alec Soth is an award-winning photographer who has published a number of highly acclaimed books and has just celebrated a major retrospective of his work at the Walker Arts Centre in his hometown of Minneapolis. He is a member of Magnum and runs his own publishing company and blog, Little Brown Mushroom.
Brighton Picture Hunt was commissioned by Photoworks for the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: New Documents 2010, curated by Martin Parr. Exhibited as part of the exhibition Strange and Familiar: three views of Brighton at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery.
