With verso advertisement for "Modoc Indian Oil," which the "Indians believe to be the Great Spirit's Medicine."
 
During 1873, McKay was in charge of a group of Warm Springs Indian scouts who were hired by the US Army to lead troops into the lava beds of western Oregon in search of the Modoc renegade Captain Jack and his band.
