Johan Hagemeyer made a sea voyage for a visit back to his native Holland in 1920. This was in the period of his close association with his friend Edward Weston, during a time when both were moving from pictorialism to modernism. Hagemeyer took advantage of the days on the Metagama to make this important self-portrait that uses the ship's architecture to make an abstract composition. He presents himself as a lonely, moody figure. (Larry Gottheim)
