View of St Paul's Pro-Cathedral and its surroundings, including a fortified sea wall and, on the right-hand side, the Beverley's hotel (now destroyed) which hosted, amongst others, Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832).

The cathedral, built between 1839 and 1844, was commissioned by the Dowager Queen Adelaide (1792-1849) who spent the winter of 1838-9 in Malta and was dismayed to find no proper place of Anglican worship on the island. The church, with its spire rising to over 65 metres, represents one of Valletta's landmarks.
