The leaf is gathered from the Peepal tree, which in Hinduism is associated with Lord Shiva - who is said to reside in the tree. The leaves are soaked in lime water to reveal their skeletal structure; they are dried; and then placed in the enlarger to produce the leaf pattern around the portrait.
