426 Base of Nelson's Column, Trafalgar Square
[London and Neighbourhood, Stereoscopic Gems]
n.d.

Stereocard
Paul Frecker

LL/12013

The four bronze bas-relief at the base of the column were cast from cannon captured in Nelson's battles. The four bronze lions designed by Sir Edwin Landseer were not placed in position until 1867, nearly a quarter of a century after the column itself, and indeed their continued non-appearance became something of a London joke. In 1873 they were decorated with mourning wreaths on the day of Landseer's funeral.
