Photograph of a Zulu woman known as a 'witch finder'. She is standing facing the camera holding a stick in her left hand. She is wearing a patterned tunic and a feather headdress. Parts of her face and arms are painted white. There is a painted backdrop of a forest behind. Witch finders were members of the Zulu community who sought out those who had committed crimes. This photograph was taken during the Anglo-Zulu War (1879), which ended the independence of the Zulu Kingdom and brought it under British control.
