(mount) Metropolitan Museum of Art Gilman Collection, Purchase, The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation Gift, through Joyce and Robert Menschel, 2005, Accession Number: 2005.100.339 LL/105777 In 1857 a reservation was created north of Mendocino to resettle the native Pomo people, and Fort Bragg was established to oversee it. Ethnographic studies were not typical of Watkins, but he found in this man-made structure something of the monumentality that also caught his eye in nature.
