It saw 65 million people under arms, and produced about 10 million dead and another 20 million wounded without a single decisive battle. This image was made as part of a series of 240 Autochromes that appeared in one of the earliest books on war published in color, chronicling the Battle of the Marne, one of the bloodiest battles of the war.
