Press release

In 1953, at the age of 25, Okanoue Toshiko exhibited her collages in a Tokyo gallery. At the time, she wrote that she knew almost nothing about art history and that she lacked confidence in her ability to draw. But she began to work with a stack of lifestyle and fashion magazines, cutting out photographs from them that, as she says, fit her dreams. She wrote, "those scraps of my fantasies turned into strangely interesting things."These initial experiments were the genesis of Okanoue´s tantalizing collages.
