September 1937ThumbnailAs the USA is in the Great Depression of the 1930s the Farm Security Administration (FSA) is established by the Department of Agriculture. It employs many socially committed photographers to record the lives of everyday people. The archive they produce becomes one of the historical treasures of the USA. 
2 September 1945ThumbnailGeneral McArthur accepted the surrender of the Empire of Japan on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. 
4 September 1888 George Eastman patents his camera (U.S. patent No, 388,850).
5 September 1936ThumbnailRobert Capa takes his most famous photograph Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano during the Spanish Civil War. It becomes one of the seminal war images.
8 September 2001 The Photo Agency VII is founded by the photojournalists Alexandra Boulat, Ron Haviv, Gary Knight, Antonin Kratochvil, Christopher Morris, James Nachtwey and John Stanmeyer. Their intention being to document conflict - environmental, social and political, both violent and non-violent - to produce an unflinching record of the injustices created and experienced by people caught up in the events they describe
10 September 1839 The transatlantic steamer Great Western docks in New York at 7 a.m., Sept. 10, 1839 bringing the French and English newspapers that announce the Daguerreotype and include the first instructions for their production. 
11 September 2001ThumbnailAttack on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. 
13 September 1898 Reverend Hannibal Goodwin (1822-1900) is granted a patent (U.S. 610,861) for "photographic pellicle and process of producing same ... especially in connection with roller cameras" in simple terms celluloid photographic film. 
16 September 1839 D.W. Seager takes the first successful Daguerreotype in North America - the subject is St Paul's Church, New York. 
20 September 1948ThumbnailW. Eugene Smith publishes his photo-essay Country Doctor in LIFE magazine in the USA.
