Man Ray (1890, 27 August - 1976, 18 November) was born - US, PA, Philadelphia. American surrealist photographer and artist. A major fashion photographer in the 1920s and 30s he was also able to blend his commercial work with experimental styles that endeared him to the Dada and Surrealist movements. 
  
Captain George William Playfair (1826, 27 August - 1875, 26 November) was born - India, Calcutta.  
  
John Charles Stovin (1814, 27 August - 1896, April) was born - England, Nottinghamshire, East Retford. W.E.B. Du Bois (1868, 23 February - 1963, 27 August) died - Ghana, Accra. African American sociologist, civil rights activist, historian, educator and prolific author. Gordon Matta-Clark (1943, 22 June - 1978, 27 August) died. Conceptual artist who studied architecture at Cornell University who explored architectural elements in his work and documented the process on film, video and photography. 
  
Carlo Mollino (1905, 6 May - 1973, 27 August) died. Italian architect, designer, teacher and photographer. Produced a series of Polaroids.
