Tošo Dabac (1907, 18 May - 1970, 9 May) was born - Croatia, Nova Raca nr. Bjelovar. Croatian artist and photographer of the Zagreb school. He took street photographs in Zagreb in the 1930s and 1940s. 
  
Tim Gidal (1909, 18 May - 1996) was born - Germany, Munich. One of the leading photojournalists of the twentieth century. 
  
Gertrude Käsebier (1852, 18 May - 1934, 13 October) was born - US, IA, Fort Des Moines [now Des Moines]. One of the leading American pictorialist photographers. Kasebier learnt photography in the USA and Paris and worked with F. Holland Day, Clarence H. White and Alvin Langdon Coburn, she was actively involved in the Linked Ring Brotherhood and the More... 
  
Martin Munkácsi (1896, 18 May - 1963, 13 July) was born - Hungary, Munkacsi, Kolozsvar [now Romania, Cluj-Napoca]. Fashion photographer.
 
His younger brother Muky Munkacsi was also a photographer. 
  
W.G. Sebald (1944, 18 May - 2001, 14 December) was born - Germany, Wertach im Allgäu. German writer and academic who combined indistinct photographs with his innovative literary works. 
  
Camille Silvy (1834, 18 May - 1910, 2 February) was born - France, Eure-et-Loir, Nogent-le-Rotrou. French landscape and portrait photographer who moved to London in 1859 and became one of the leading carte-de-visite photographers. 
  
Antal Vállas (1809, 18 May - 1869, 20 July) was born - Hungary, Pest. A teacher of mathematics at the University of Pest he was one of the first in Hungary to use the daguerreotype process.
