18 February 1913ThumbnailThe International Exhibition of Modern Art is held in New York and becomes known as the Armory Show taking the name from the Armory building. The exhibition introduces the American public to European trends in painting and sculpture. It is a revelation to those that see it and it impacts on photography by showing that copying the stylistic techniques and conventions of painting, as many of the pictorialists do, is no longer valid. 
 
  
Lajos Geenen (1972, 18 February - ) was born - The Netherlands, Bleiswijk,. Contemporary Dutch-born photographer. 
  
Philip Jones Griffiths (1936, 18 February - 2008, 19 March) was born - UK, Wales, Rhuddlan. Started working for The Manchester Guardian and then The Observer newspapers in the UK. In 1962 he covered the Algerian War but his major impact was during the Vietnam war with his book "Vietnam, Inc." This book is generally seen as More... 
  
Helmar Lerski (1871, 18 February - 1956, 29 November) was born - France, Strasbourg. Swiss photographer, filmmaker and actor. Started as a banker and then became an actor. He took up photography when he was 39 and his striking portrait style, using a harsh and at time unflattering light, was well respected. He was involved in More... 
  
Ernst Mach (1838, 18 February - 1916, 19 February) was born - Austrian Empire, Chirlitz (now Chrlice, part of Brno in the Czech Republic). Austrian scientist who used photography to capture high speed processes such as the supersonic flight of a projectile. 
  
Duane Michals (1932, 18 February - ) was born - US, PA, McKeesport. American photographer, fashion photography, portraits and then the interiors of empty New York shops. He turned to creating sequences of photographs that were like scenes ripped out of a movie - these were frequently annotated with comments. 
  
Anne Brigman (1869, 3 December - 1950, 18 February) died - US, CA, Oakland / El Monte. Granddaughter of the missionary to Hawaii Lorrin Andrews; she went to US mainland and became a famous Pictorialist photographer, part of the Alfred Stieglitz inner circle; made no images in her native Hawaii but returned for a visit in 1928.

Andreas Feininger (1906, 27 December - 1999, 18 February) died. Abstract Bauhaus photography and later became a staff photographer for LIFE magazine (1942-1962). Brother of photographer T. Lux Feininger
