14 March 1839ThumbnailSir John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871) presents his paper Note on the art of Photography, or The Application of the Chemical Rays of Light to the Purpose of Pictorial Representation to the Royal Society and this is the first time the word photography is used.
 
  
Diane Arbus (1923, 14 March - 1971, 26 July) was born - US, NY, New York. Worked first in the fashion world with her husband Allan Arbus and then moved into documentary photography for magazines. Her best known work is the extensive series of portraits she took of people on the fringes of society: carnival performers, More... 
  
James M. Hoddle (1902, 14 March - 1992, 21 March) was born - US, IL, Chicago.  
  
Chris Hondros (1970, 14 March - 2011, 20 April) was born - US, NY, New York City. American photojournalist. From 1998 onwards he covered conflicts in Kosovo, Angola, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Kashmir, the West Bank, Iraq, Liberia and Libya. He was killed in Libya while reporting on the battles of the Arab Spring. 
  
Jerzy Lewczynski (1924, 14 March - ) was born - Poland, Tomaszˇw Lubelski.  
  
Cecil Bendall (1856, 1 July - 1906, 14 March) died - England, Cambridge.  
  
George Eastman (1854, 12 July - 1932, 14 March) died. American inventor and businessman. Founder of Kodak. George Eastman House in Rochester NY has a collection of over 10,000 of his original photographs. Ben Shahn (1898, 12 September - 1969, 14 March) died. American lithographer, painter and photographer. From 1935-1938 he worked for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in the USA.
