In a Czech magazine Svetozor in 1890 a series of four cartoons by Arthur Scheiner (1863-1938) on the theme At the Photographer were published:
  1. "Do you really want to be in one photo? That’ll be difficult, but we’ll do our best. Sit down, please.

  2. "Be good, relax and smile, please."

  3. "Get closer and smile…"

  4. "And now, say cheese, please."[1]

Within Czechoslovakia there was a flourishing of the avant-garde that came together in Prague in 1920 in the Devetsil group of intellectuals and artists. The prime motivator was Karel Teige (1900-1951) and they published a number of magazines including ReD that ran from 1927-1931. During this period there was a group of highly talented experimental photographers including Jaromír Funke, Jaroslav Rössler and the more traditional Josef Sudek (The 'Poet of Prague').

The photographs of Bohemian photographer Frantisek Drtikol (1993-1961) were included in two of his books Le nus de Drtikol (1929) and Zena ve Svetle (1930)[2] and his work has been well studied.[3] Active approximately from 1907 until 1935 his worked covered the transitions between Pictorialism, Modernism, and Art Deco. An exponent of the Czech avant-garde his female nudes embraced these changes with their geometric sets of stairs, cubes, balls and hoops with the posed bodies taking on symbolic, if not spiritual, poses. His later paintings would include elements of philosophical and Buddhist beliefs.

In 1924 he founded with Josef Sudek and Adolf Schneeberger the Czech Photographic Society (Ceskou fotografickou spolecnost).[4]
