Generally it is not appreciated just how early color photography took place and the wide variety of different techniques that were used to achieve it. These early landscape photographs of forests taken by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863 - 1943) used a three-color separation system that he had invented requiring three frames on a single glass plate.
 
A collection of his work is available at the Library of Congress [Prints and Photographs Division].
