Dr. William Despard Hemphill (1816-1902) was an early Irish photographer who took stereoscopic photographs and used them early on for book illustration. His, presumably privately printed, book The Abbeys, Castles, and Scenery of Clonmel and the Surrounding Countryside (1860) is a very early example of this.

From Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan , when John J. Clarke was a medical student in Dublin he took photographs of street life between 1897 and 1904.[1] He captured the city that would be made famous by James Joyce in his collection of short-stories Dubliners (1914) and in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). This is the world of gentlemen with top hats and the working man with flat caps. One of the photographs, which as been given the title Man with umbrella standing at the junction of Nassau Street, Grafton Street and Suffolk Street, captures a moment on the street that would be perfect for a pointillist painting by George Seurat (1859-1891).

Footnotes

  1. Λ A collection of the photographs of J.J. Clarke is in the National Library of Ireland.
