296.02 Landscape > Jerry Uelsmann: Trees About this photographer | Photographs by this photographer
The photomontages of Jerry Uelsmann are reminiscent of the haunted images of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) but here they are enhanced by the seamless blending of components into worlds that can not exist. Trees float above lakes, a boat rests on the floor of room with a ceiling of clouds. These are fantasy worlds that are frequently a homage to the surrealist artists such as Max Ernst or Man Ray - but done with a respect for the original, imaginative twists and mastery of tonal craftsmanship. 296.03 Landscape > Maggie Taylor: Landscape of dreams and other visions About this photographer | Photographs by this photographer
Maggie Taylor was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1961, and graduated from Yale University in 1983 with a BA degree in philosophy. In 1987 she received an MFA in photography from the University of Florida. After ten years of creating vibrant color still-life images with a view camera, Taylor began to work with the computer in 1996. By placing objects directly on the glass top of the scanner she is able to create a unique type of digital image that has some photographic qualities. Many of the images feature portions of her drawings, as well as found objects and bits of old tintype photographs.

Artist Statement
The idea of a Fantasy Island, let alone a whole Archipelago, being discovered by a
miniaturized man sailing the High Seas in the giant seed of a Coco de Mer
is a contradiction in what we used to call words if not terms
The Delicious twins of Naples stated as much when they took their preprandial walk
along
the Causeway of Indiscretion
"Pollination by wind and rain" cried FOOt and Mouth Island the most talkative island
of all the archipelago
Lodoicea callipyge meaning 'beautiful buttocks' whispered the camel atop
Desert Island
as "his salacious grin faltered" the marginal creatures come out to play
Quite simply Nose Island wanted to be discovered
Paul Biddle in his July 2011 blog provided the supporting evidence, or lack thereof, for these Fantasy Islands...
Many people have asked the same question: Do Paul Biddles' Fantasy Islands actually exist? The simple answer is No, but here are some comments we have received in the past.
Christopher Colombus: I could never make up my mind if it was Nor Nor East or just plain Nor Nor Nor. 21st June, 1498.
Ferdinand Magellan : Whilst completing my first Circumnavigation of the World I happened upon a Strait called Biddle but it led to Nowhere. 1520
Francis Drake : I had always heard the best and most capacious ruffs were made in the Strait of Biddle but I never quite found them. 1590
Marco Polo : When I was exploring Asia, a dear friend of mine called Kublai Khan mentioned the existence of such an Archipelago but he found it very difficult to pronounce the word Biddle. 1290
