Introduction

122.02   Asia >  Introduction to photography in Indonesia

The history of Indonesia since the early seventeenth century has been closely linked with European colonization as the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was established in 1602 and dominated the spice trade until 1800 when the government of The Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies. Dutch control continued until the Second World War when Japanese forces occupied the region. Soon after the war ended there was a nationalist movement seeking to move away from Dutch rule and in December 1949 Indonesia gained its independence.[1]

Given the strong connections between The Netherlands and the region it is not surprising that early photographers included Dutch photographers or their major portfolios were printed in The Netherlands. There are daguerreotypes taken by Adolph Schaefer of the archaeological remains of The Buddhist monument at Borobudur in Central Java taken in 1844-1845.[2][3]

Kassian Cephas (1845-1912) was court photographer to the Sultans of Yogyakarta where he took portraits of the royal family and the ceremonies and performances of the court. He also photographed the reliefs at Borobudur the ninth century Mahayana Buddhist monument in Magelang, Central Java.[4]

In 2007 the National Gallery of Australia purchased a large collection of photographs of South-East Asia from the collection of Leo Haks and this has made them a key research center for the study of photography in Indonesia. The "Garden of the East: Photography in Indonesia 1850s - 1940s" exhibition in 2014 showed a selection from this collection.[5]

The German auction house Bassenge puts this series of photographs by Daniel David Veth taken in Central Sumatra, now part of Indonesia, in context:
Between 1877- 79 the Royal Netherlands Geographical Society (Koninklijk Nederlandsch Aardrrjkskundig Genootschap) organized a scientific expedition to Central Sumatra (Dutch East Indies) led by Lieutenant Johannes Schouw Santvoort (Royal Dutch Navy), with members Daniel David Veth (geographer and photographer), Arend Ludolf van Hasselt (ethnographer) and Johannes Francois Snelleman (zoologist). Son of the geographer and ethnographer Pieter Johannes Veth (1814-1895), who supervised the publication of the present album, Daniel David Veth was educated in Dutch schools and attended technical colleges in Hanover and Stuttgart to learn engineering. In 1877 he was summoned to join the Central Sumatra expedition. The expedition's objective was to map the Hari River basin and to study the people and the natural environment of Central Sumatra. Veth was responsible for the photographs and mapping. He died an early death from dysentery after the gruelling conditions of an expedition in Africa led to his illness.[6]

In the collections at the Universiteit Leiden, Prentenkabinet there are a number of daguerreotypes taken between 1844 and 1845 by Adolph Schaefer of the sculptures at the Mahayana Buddhist monument at Borobudur in Central Java, Indonesia.[7]

Like Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey documenting the monuments of the Classical and Ancient world[8] the work of Schaefer is an early example of using daguerreotypes as an aid to archaeological research. In America Thomas Easterly[9] used daguerreotypes to document The Destruction of Big Mound (1853-1854) St. Louis showing how surviving photographs could record the destruction of cultural sites.

In 1873-1874 Isidore van Kinsbergen was commissioned by the Batavian Society for Arts and Sciences to document the ruins at Borobudur.[10]

Press release, National Gallery of Australia, 2014 on the exhibition "Garden of the East: Photography in Indonesia 1850s - 1940s":
Garden of the East: Photography in Indonesia 1850s - 1940s, belongs to this series of exhibitions, which in over 200 photographs, albums and view books, constitutes the first scholarly and documented history of photography in Indonesia before independence. It covers the period from colonial rule under the Dutch East India Company through to the formation of the modern entity of the Republic of Indonesia in 1945. Most of the names of photographers in this exhibition are unfamiliar to all but a few dedicated scholars and very few images have been in popular circulation.
I'm indepted to David Wormleaton for bringing this to my attention (pers. email, 31 December 2014).
