Danny Lyon has a rich body of work going back to the 1960s with his masterful documentary The Bikeriders which combined interviews with the participants in their own words along with the photographs. The connection between the text and the photographs was exemplified by earlier books such as Dorothea Lange's photographs and the writing of Paul Schuster Taylor in An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion (1939). In Conversations with the Dead Danny Lyon used interviews and stories written by prison inmates along with his photographs. There was no separation here between the visual and textual and each supported the other.
