The 1999 namesake of this book presented twentieth-century photographs that were very familiar and typical of their photographers. It also hinted that companion albums were on the way. Here is one, temporally oriented like its forebear, and pleading the case for the individuality of the photographer in each left-hand-page annotation of one of the 60-odd pictures displayed (usually) on right-hand pages. Along with the evaluative note are a small portrait and a biographical precis of the photographer, and another of his works printed at about snapshot size. Including Fox Talbot's 1844 still life of a broom in an open doorway; Bayard's 1840 Self-Portrait as a Drowned Man, Paris (one of the grandest poor-me gestures ever made); Howlett's 1857 portrait of shipbuilder Isambard Kingdom Brunel nonchalantly posed, smoking a cigar, before massive iron chains; Watkins' still breathtaking Yosemite Valley from the Best General View (1866); Kasebier's mother-daughter icon Blessed Art Thou among Women; and others as famous, the book lives up to its name and earns entree into all popular-photography collections.
