He wants a dog to play with more than anything. In his imagination, he teaches his dream pet to sit, stay, fetch, and roll over (his pretend friend is a stuffed toy Weimaraner). Chip's parents do not want a dog. His mom (a dog wearing a platinum blond wig and sneakers) is a "cat person," and his dad argues that dogs are a big responsibility. In one hilariously staged breakfast scene, the three sit around a table, expressionless: "There is nothing more to discuss." One day, after a vivid dream, Chip realizes that he is actually a dog and therefore doesn't need one: "He took himself for a walk, taught himself new tricks, and gave himself a bone." This offbeat story turns the "child wants dog" story on its head and is sure to generate giggles from both kids and adults. Karin Snelson
