World Press Photo is an international nonprofit organization that supports and promotes photojournalism and organizes an annual press photography contest. Aside from representing what is judged to be the best of photojournalism in 1999, this collection also reflects a wide spectrum of headline-grabbing and ordinary events, including the intifada riots against Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory, the aftermath of the bombing of the U.S. embassy in Kenya, ethnic clashes in Albania, flooding in Bangladesh, and various human dramas and amusements. The foreword praises the heroic efforts of photojournalists and laments the increasing barriers and animosity aimed at them by some governments. The book is organized into topics: people in the news, portraits, sports, daily life, the arts, nature and the environment, science and technology, and general news. The powerful images, in black-and-white and color, record news and provide a fascinating, sometimes disturbingly graphic view of the human condition. Vanessa Bush

Will amuse, sadden, console, and ultimately teach you much about this world of ours.
Book Description
For more than fifty years an international jury has met in Holland under the auspices of the World Press Photo Foundation to choose the world's finest photographs. This is universally recognized as the definitive competition for photographic reporting, and photojournalists, newspapers, and magazines throughout the world submit thousands of images in the race to win. The World Press Photo Competition 1999, the forty-second contest in the series, brings together some 200 images. The best pictorial journalism from an eventful year, this selection brings us face to face with contemporary world events--an impressive visual record of social, political, cultural, scientific, and, above all, human milestones.
