Book Description

The aesthetic appreciation of twentieth-century photography has grown rapidly over the last 20 years. In particular, photography at the Bauhaus - the most influential experimental school of art and design of this century - has gained the widespread interest of museums, galleries, and private collectors. Photography at the Bauhaus will become the definitive resource and standard reference book on its subject. It showcases in more than 700 illustrations the rich collection of the Bauhaus-Archiv and brings together leading scholars who examine the significance of Bauhaus masters and students, discuss the importance of Bauhaus photography and its legacy, and provide close readings of the images themselves. Photography at the Bauhaus contains substantial texts on the Bauhaus masters Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Lucia Moholy, Umbo, T. Lux Feininger, Florence Henri, Herbert Bayer, Walter Peterhans, and Moshe Raviv. These are followed by essays covering the various phases of the development of the medium at the Bauhaus, architectural and product photography, applied photography and "typofoto," the egg in 1920s photography, the stage photography of the Oscar Schlemmer era, photographic education under Walter Peterhans, and the Bauhaus photographic legacy in agencies, reportage, and documentary. Biographies of every Bauhaus photographer are also included.
