Oct 8, 2007 Roger Mayne
In 1950s Roger Mayne documented the poverty and appalling housing conditions in London and the English industrial cities of the post-war period. Soon afterwards the swinging sixties may have made Britain a center for pop culture and fashion but there were deep seated economic problems. The Gitterman Gallery (NYC, USA) is currently showing a selection of this powerful work (September 21 - November 30, 2007).

Oct 8, 2007 Homer Sykes: Once a Year - Some Traditional British Customs
In 1977 the book "Once a Year: Some Traditional British Customs" was published by Gordon Fraser (ISBN 0900406682) and I purchased a copy soon afterwards. I'd been interested in attending some of these customs and was doing an evening course on English Cultural Traditions and Folklore given by Professor John Widdowson at Sheffield University. It is a pleasure to include the documentary work of Homer Sykes.

Oct 2, 2007 Gabriel Lippmann - error in his dates in Newsletter 3
Apologies for the error in the Newsletter 1.3 - the true dates for Gabriel Lippmann are August 16, 1845 to July 13, 1921 when he died on board the liner SS France returning to France from a trip to the USA. My mistake and thanks to Bill Alschuler for pointing this out.

Oct 1, 2007 Competition 3 - Oct 1, 2007
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of color photography Pam Roberts has authored an authoritative overview A Century of Colour Photography: From the autochrome to the digital age and the publisher Carlton Books has kindly supplied some copies for us to give away on Luminous-Lint.

For our next competition I‘d like to hear about a 19th century photographer not included on this website who should be! So send through your suggestion with any biographical details you have - dates etc and the reason the person should be included to comp3@luminous-lint.com with the name of the suggested photographer as the subject line. Two winners will be selected at random and will be announced in the next newsletter. Good luck.

Filling in gaps...

We currently include details on over 5,700 significant photographers from all parts of the world and this competition serves the dual purpose of being a bit of fun and helping us fill in a few more gaps. If you have some example images by your selected photographer let me know so we can add them in, with full credits, for the benefit of all.

Sep 28, 2007 New version of the Luminous-Lint website released
Thanks to all your support the website is expanding at an incredible rate and to accommodate some exciting features a new version has just been released. This version is faster and will allow us to have vastly more information on individual photographers as the website expands - this will be important as we start to include catalogue raisonné. There are lots of changes that improve navigation and allow for future developments.

We are continuing to move ahead at quite a speed and there are lots more systems on the way!
