This online show of the work of Hiroshi Watanabe is courtesy of Watermark Fine Art Photographs & Books (Houston, TX, USA) and coincides with their gallery exhibition that runs from September 8 - October 17, 2007.

| | The significant role of the amateur is frequently understated but it can leave a remarkable legacy that illustrates contemporary trends in the wider art world. In this exhibition Belgian collector Florent Van Hoof shows works by three friends and amateur autochromists - the doctor Paul Sano, the accountant Charles Corbet and the painter Alfonse Van Besten. Each had his own style but overall their work reflects the scientific and experimental mingled with the romantic themes common in pictorialism. Thanks to Florent for sharing these remarkable autochromes.

| | On September 17, 2007 the short-listed photographers for the £12,000 Photographic Portrait Prize run by the National Portrait Gallery in the UK were announced. This is one of the most significant photographic awards with 6,900 submissions entered by 2,700 photographers from around the world. Michelle Sank, who explores the very essence of adolescence, has been listed as one of the four short-listed photographers. Many congratulations to Michelle.

| | By way of background...
The Daguerreian Society is an organization of hundreds of individuals and institutions sharing a common interest in the art, history and practice of the daguerreotype and related early photography. Our members include students and teachers… museum curators and scientists... collectors and dealers... historians, photographers and artists. Daguerreotypes -- the glittering, mirror-like images made by the world's first practical system of photography -- are only one part of what brings us together. Over the years, we've learned to appreciate the skills and knowledge of our fellow members, and their dedication to increasing the world's understanding of early photography and its role in history. Our organization holds an annual Symposium, publishes a Newsletter and an Annual with scholarly articles, and maintains an extensive website with Daguerreian images and information, which we encourage you to visit.
Thanks to Matthew Isenburg (President), the members of the board and to Christopher Wahren who runs the society website for their assistance.
It is important to support non-profits and educational organizations that promote the scholarly history of photography. If you are involved in such a project let me know and, if appropriate, I'll make sure your organization is included.

| | I'm delighted that Terry Etherton of the Etherton Gallery in Tucson, AZ (USA) and Wilson Scanlan from the Verve Gallery For Photography in Santa Fe, NM (USA) will be supplying examples of scans to illustrate Luminous-Lint. The rich images and biographies provided by these galleries will allow us to provide better resources to the photo-community.
