Sep 27, 2007 | August Sander: People of the 20th Century: Portraits of German Citizens 1910 - 1940
| The Kathleen Ewing Gallery in Washington D.C. has kindly provided this exhibition to coincide with their gallery show (September 14 - October 27, 2007). The strength of the work of August Sander lies in its basic humanity and his desire to include all strata of German society. Here the circus performer receives the same attention as the art dealer or the pharmacist. | This online show of the work of Hiroshi Watanabe is courtesy of Watermark Fine Art Photographs & Books (Houston, TX, USA) and coincides with their gallery exhibition that runs from September 8 - October 17, 2007.
"My photographs reflect both genuine interest in my subject as well as a respect for the element of serendipity, while other times I seek pure beauty. The pure enjoyment of this process drives and inspires me. I believe there's a thread that connects all of my work - my personal vision of the world as a whole." Sep 23, 2007 | Belgian autochromes
| The significant role of the amateur is frequently understated but it can leave a remarkable legacy that illustrates contemporary trends in the wider art world. In this exhibition Belgian collector Florent Van Hoof shows works by three friends and amateur autochromists - the doctor Paul Sano, the accountant Charles Corbet and the painter Alfonse Van Besten. Each had his own style but overall their work reflects the scientific and experimental mingled with the romantic themes common in pictorialism. Thanks to Florent for sharing these remarkable autochromes.
Your photographic collection
If you would like to show significant examples from your collection please let me know as sharing your images assists us all in understanding the complex and intriguing history of photography. If you prefer your photographs to be shown anonymously that is perfectly fine and I'll do everything I can to accommodate your requirements. All the best and I look forward to hearing from you,Alan Griffiths alan@luminous-lint.com | PhVTitle | Lightbox | Checklist Exhibition: The Collector's Perspective: Belgian Autochromes - Florent Van Hoof

Sep 19, 2007 | Randa Mizra: Reflections on Wars - The Culture of Shock
| Randa Mizra explores the effects of war upon a country - but at a deeper level she uses photomontage to examine the way that we perceive events through a media filter. When she stands looking at us holding a TV remote and ready to click away from another grizzly world event the message is clear even though our attention span is fragmentary.. Sep 16, 2007 | The Daguerreian Society | |
| By way of background...
The Daguerreian Society is an organization of hundreds of individuals and institutions sharing a common interest in the art, history and practice of the daguerreotype and related early photography. Our members include students and teachers… museum curators and scientists... collectors and dealers... historians, photographers and artists. Daguerreotypes -- the glittering, mirror-like images made by the world's first practical system of photography -- are only one part of what brings us together. Over the years, we've learned to appreciate the skills and knowledge of our fellow members, and their dedication to increasing the world's understanding of early photography and its role in history. Our organization holds an annual Symposium, publishes a Newsletter and an Annual with scholarly articles, and maintains an extensive website with Daguerreian images and information, which we encourage you to visit.
Thanks to Matthew Isenburg (President), the members of the board and to Christopher Wahren who runs the society website for their assistance.
It is important to support non-profits and educational organizations that promote the scholarly history of photography. If you are involved in such a project let me know and, if appropriate, I'll make sure your organization is included.
