Say it to his face, not behind his back.
It is not right to criticize a person behind his back.

I hope you enjoy this series of how we fail to see ourselves.

Mar 23, 2008 Waxed paper negatives

Many people will not have seen waxed paper negatives from the 1840s and 50s and so I thought it would be useful to bring together a number of the rare surviving examples from around the world and include them in a single online exhibition. This exhibition includes examples by William Henry Fox Talbot, Charles Negre, Alphonse de Brebisson, Fortune-Joseph Petiot-Groffier, William Crookes, Thomas Keith, Alfred Capel Cure, P.G. Fitzgerald, Ferdinand Tillard and some negatives made by John Murray near Agra in India in the 1850s that are in the Bonhams, London auction (April 9, 2008).

I'd like to include a brief introduction on these and if you have a suitable piece or further examples please let me know alan@luminous-lint.com

Mar 23, 2008 Timothy O'Sullivan: Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian (1871-1874)

ThumbnailThumbnailThumbnail

First Lieutenant (later Captain) George Montague Wheeler supervised a series of geographical expeditions between 1869 and 1879 west of the US 100th meridian. The area to be covered was south of the Central Pacific Railroad with the intention of preparing maps and collecting accurate topographical information. Beyond the map making he was to collect information on Indian tribes and the resources of the vast areas covered which now includes the states of New Mexico, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, and Texas. This is an area of 1,443,360 square miles.

The expeditions were accompanied by Timothy O'Sullivan (1840 - 1882) who took the photographs that were a significant part of the undertaking. He recorded the landscapes, the activities of the teams and significant findings such as the carved inscriptions of 17th century Spanish travelers who had passed through what is now the El Morro National Monument (New Mexico).

Another photographer on the expeditions was William Bell (1830 - 1910) and in addition to albumen prints from wet collodion negatives they took stereographic views and portraits of the Indian tribes including the Zuni, Mojave, Navajo, Apache, and Ute.

Mar 22, 2008 Philip Jones Griffiths (1936-2008)
On March 19, 2008 Philip Jones Griffiths died in London (UK) at the age of 71. His book "Vietnam, Inc." was immensely influential in changing public opinion about the war and his work always showed his humanism. He was a member of Magnum and served as president from 1980 to 1985.

Mar 22, 2008 Scott Mutter (1944-2008)
The American filmmaker and photographer Scott Mutter was found dead at Park Ridge, IL (USA). He was influenced by the editing and montage processes of the Russian director Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein (1898-1948). He moved on to creating composite photographs that he termed ‘Surrational Images‘. As he wrote:

"Each person that has worked in montage has become known for his particular way of wanting to work, so they have a particular, not just eccentricity, but a fingerprint. I think that my fingerprint is a feeling for fusion and blending and metamorphosing of elements that have a sum-a material, structural semblance."

Mar 21, 2008 New version of Luminous-Lint released
Thanks to all the curators, gallery owners, collectors, photographers who have been assisting with interviews and sharing your ideas with Theresa for Luminous-Lint. This website is entirely about sharing information with the community and we are most grateful for all your thoughts. You may have noticed that over the last two weeks we haven't added many new exhibitions but things have been far from quiet and so we have a new version of this website for you!

There are so many ways that this website has been improved that it is difficult to list them all but you will see:
  • Improved navigation throughout the site
  • The first phase of the Photobooks project
  • Listings of exhibition by city
  • Finding photographers by theme
  • Improved ways of locating the right galleries and dealers
  • Ways of seeing the most popular online exhibitions, photographers, galleries and dealers

These are only some of the enhancements and you'll find lots of others as you explore this site. One of the revealing things about this version is how it shows the amazing depth of material provided by the community. Let me know what you think and any ideas you have for how it can be improved.

I'll now get back to creating some stimulating exhibitions for you, incorporating some rare and novel content and continue preparing the MyLint area.

Best wishes
Alan
