Nov 29, 2007 Portugal 1934 - Photomontage as propaganda

ThumbnailThumbnailThumbnail

"Portugal 1934" was published in Lisbon and edited by S.P.N. (Secretariado Nacional de Propaganda) as a propaganda book to support the right-wing regime of Salazar inaugurated in 1933. It uses a mix of photographs and bold type fonts to show the supposed benefits of strong government. Thanks to Luis Trindade (P4photography, www.p4photography.com) for providing this exhibition.

Nov 26, 2007 Joćo Mariano: Alembics & Alchemists
On this website we've included documentary projects that show us worlds that are changing and I look back on the work of Kevin Bubriski in Nepal, Homer Sykes on British Customs, Sarah Hoskins in the African-American hamlets in Kentucky's Inner Bluegrass Region and Susan Ressler among the Algonquian in Canada. This study by Joćo Mariano takes us into the world of the private distillers of the hills of the Algarve in Portugal. Here the medronho berry is distilled into a rich tasting spirit - aguardente - a tradition of centuries is heading towards extinction as it confronts European regulations.

Thanks to Joćo Mariano, Teresa Resende and Luis Trindade (P4photography, www.p4photography.com) for their assistance.

This series of platinum prints by the California-based photographer Beth Moon is accompanied by diary extracts that give a sense of the devotional tone. I see a lot of photographs in a day but I know these will stay with me.

Nov 23, 2007 Around the World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums

ThumbnailThumbnailThumbnail

In common most vernacular imagery photograph albums have, until recently, been largely neglected as resources for academic study. The quality of material is variable and the photographers frequently anonymous - but amidst the plethora of mundane material there are albums of real significance.

Barbara Levine & Kirsten Jensen in their new book Around the World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums (Princeton Architectural Press, 2007) include some extraordinary examples and I'd like to thank them for allowing us to include them here.

If you have a significant photo album from any part of the world associated with an interesting story or personality I'd be most interested in hearing about it.

Nov 21, 2007 Thomas Allen: Uncovered
Appropriated images have long been used in photography with Walker Evans photographing the studio portraits in his Penny Picture Display, Savannah, Georgia (1936) or the intriguing work of Sherrie Levine where she reuses the work of Walker Evans. Andy Warhol, Robert Heinecken and Richard Prince have all used the images of others and further back we can see it in the works of the great photomontagists such as John Heartfield in Weimar Germany or Rodchenko in Soviet Russia.

Thomas Allen is fascinated by pulp fiction and in his Uncovered series uses the covers of novels to create their own intrigues. Thanks to the Foley Gallery (New York) for permission to include this exhibition.

Nov 21, 2007 Trees: A Pictorialist perspective

ThumbnailThumbnailThumbnail

This exhibition of photographs of trees taken between 1890 and 1930 shows the stylistic approaches the pictorialists used to duplicate painting.

"A trees a tree. How many more do you need to look at?"
Ronald Reagan quoted in the Sacramento Bee (12 March 1966). He later denied having said it.
